College graduations come to the workforce with great GPAs and academic models and theories. Yes, some excel in corporate spaces, but many lack the durable skills and cultural competence to navigate workforce dynamics. According to the ASHE Monograph, many institutions lack intentional and explicit programming to address cultural competence. There are often gaps between students' perceived learning and what employers observe as actual learning.

CULTURAL COMPETENCE

Some students are fortunate to travel abroad, participate in service days, and engage in internships that provide the cultural refinement needed to confidently navigate today’s corporate spaces. Unfortunately, many do not have these opportunities and find themselves ill-equipped to work effectively with others who are different, think differently, and bring unique perspectives. In these environments, employers are less impressed by a student’s GPA and more focused on their ability to solve problems, establish rapport, build connections, and demonstrate the self-awareness needed to manage themselves and others.
