FAITH-BASED LEARNING

Faith-based communities face complex challenges, including competing agendas, systemic issues, conflicting ideologies, and gaps in biblical understanding. Too often, faith-based learning emphasizes attending classes without a clear path toward meaningful growth and transformation. Paid staff and volunteers may also serve without clear expectations, measures of effectiveness, accountability, or plans to prepare future leaders. These challenges call for intentional, compassionate action. Jesus Christ, the head of the church, calls His followers to learn from Him. The Learning Edge is here to partner with you in deepening biblical understanding, equipping those who serve, and putting faith into practice.

BIBLICAL STUDIES

Biblical studies extend beyond knowing the books of the Bible. They invite careful examination, thoughtful research, and attention to the historical, cultural, and linguistic contexts of Scripture. While approaches to biblical study vary, each requires a sound theological foundation. Biblical and systematic theology deepen our understanding of God and equip us for faithful living and effective ministry. Doctrinal study further strengthens our ability to put belief into practice—in our congregations, our daily relationships, and the broader communities we serve.

MINISTRY DEVELOPMENT

Ministry development begins with developing those who serve. This means helping people align their service with their spiritual gifts and build the capabilities their roles require. Are they equipped to lead others, administer programs, or manage projects? Can they train and develop others, recognize the differences between teaching adults and children, and evaluate ministry effectiveness? Can they navigate difficult conversations with grace, guided by the Holy Spirit and grounded in Scripture? These questions help identify opportunities for intentional growth. As individuals become better equipped to serve, the ministry strengthens its capacity to fulfill its purpose and flourish.

TEACHER'S BOOTCAMP

The Biblical Educator’s Bootcamp equips teachers to nurture understanding, encourage spiritual growth, and connect biblical truth to daily life—in classrooms and virtual learning spaces. Participants will strengthen three essential skills: faithfully interpreting and explaining Scripture, crafting relevant and engaging lesson plans, and facilitating learning through creative, purposeful teaching strategies.

As stewards of biblical education, teachers must consider both the meaning of the text and how learners will engage with it. Participants will explore three domains of learning—and consider how to address each when appropriate to the lesson’s objectives. These domains describe dimensions of learning, rather than learning styles.

The bootcamp also addresses the distinct responsibilities of preachers who teach. Preaching inspires. Teaching instructs. Many preachers prepare lessons in the same way they prepare sermons. There's help for that practice. Participants will learn to recognize when proclamation needs to give way to exploration, allowing learners to examine Scripture, deepen their understanding, and apply what they learn.

BUILD A LEARNING ORGANIZATION

Many churches offer Sunday school, Christian education departments, and other opportunities for learning. Whatever its name or structure, an effective framework serves as an organized hub grounded in five pillars: vibrant, engaging learning; alignment with God’s vision as revealed in His Word; intentional discipleship; attention to the mental models—the beliefs, assumptions, and experiences—that shape how people learn; and the cultivation of personal maturity. Together, these pillars help churches meet people where they are and guide them toward deeper understanding, faithful living, and consistent application.

Special Study

Inspired by the film The Forge, The Learning Edge will launch two cohorts in 2027 for men ages 18 and older. Each cohort will engage in a five-week study using the film’s official companion curriculum, creating opportunities to deepen faith, build meaningful relationships, and put discipleship into practice. Additional workshops will address practical life topics, equipping men to forge forward with faith, purpose, and confidence.

SPIRITUAL GIFT ASSESSMENTS

Helping people serve in alignment with their spiritual gifts requires more than recognizing their talents or filling an open position. A Gospel Coalition Canada article cautions against treating visible talent as sufficient evidence of spiritual gifting or qualification for a ministry role. Barna’s research also reveals a gap between valuing gifts and developing them: although most pastors consider gift discovery and development a church priority, only 36% of practicing Christians identify a church leader as someone who has helped develop their gifts. Together, these findings suggest that alignment between gifting and service deserves more intentional attention. Churches can respond through biblical instruction, thoughtful assessments, mentoring, and opportunities to serve—helping people discern their gifts, strengthen their capabilities, and find roles where they can contribute faithfully and effectively.
